Technology is as old as mankind is, but the pace of technological innovations has never been as fast as it is nowadays. New gadgets that promise to make our lives easier and more comfortable are hitting the market on a regular basis. Companies are spending billions of dollars on advertising to lure customers into buying products which will reportedly make them more efficient.
It is true that technology makes our lives more comfortable. In fact, several technological innovations have become an integral part of our day-to-day existence. It is now impossible to imagine life without the telephone or the computer. The invention of microchips shrunk the size of electronic devices. And now communication technologies like mobile phones and internet help us stay connected 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
On the flip side, technology has become a great source of stress for people who are overly dependent on it. A broken hard drive can easily bring an ambitious project to a complete halt. This puts those working on that project under tremendous pressure. Many people feel powerless when they are outside the coverage area of their mobile network. Several others feel an uncontrollable urge to stay connected to the internet all the time. This addiction to technology has also started affecting our relationships.
In addition, as technology becomes more sophisticated, people have to spend more time learning how to use them. Unfortunately, by the time they figure out how to use a particular device a newer device sporting even more sophisticated features may arrive.
In conclusion, technological innovations have certainly made our lives more comfortable, but they won’t make us more productive unless we learn to use them correctly.
