We are now living in the ‘global village’ where geographical barriers are fast becoming extinct. Thanks to better communication techniques, we can now routinely interact with people from all over the world. I live in Mumbai but I have students from all over the world. I have also worked for people from different parts of the world. I think these experiences have made me a better person.
Improved means of traveling, falling airfares and growing awareness about other cultures now encourage more and more people to travel from place to place. In my opinion it is a positive trend. Each part of the world has something unique about it. Traveling gives you an opportunity to explore that. The truth is that the world has a lot of things to offer, which you will not be able to enjoy if you live in just one part of it. By moving around, you get to see different sights; you get to know different cultures.
Human beings have always been hit by this ‘travel bug’. If our ancestors were content with the places that they lived in, we wouldn’t have discovered many continents that we know today. It was man’s quest for knowledge and better living conditions that led him to explore further and further. If Columbus hadn’t set out on that historic journey, we wouldn’t have discovered America.
Traveling promotes global harmony. When people belonging to different cultures get to interact with one another, they learn to respect different cultures and beliefs. They realize that they have to learn something from each culture. That realization makes them more tolerant.
It is a known fact that people who have traveled widely are far more knowledgeable than people who live in one place. Traveling gives you an opportunity to interact with people from different parts of the world. It opens you mind and eyes. You learn new languages, you meet interesting people, you taste different foods and you see beautiful sights. You realize that the world is too big a place to explore during a life time.
